The best thing to happen to Microsoft's public relations in years, Windows 7 is more than just spin. The public testing process, involving one limited-availability beta and one release candidate, too, constitutes what some are calling the largest shareware trial period ever. Although the look of Windows 7 may seem to be nothing more than some polish applied liberally to the Vista Aero theme, make no mistake: this is a full replacement operating system, and more than just "Vista done right".

The good Richly featured Supports a wide range of clients The bad Noisy fan The ReadyNAS NVX is the latest in a line of similar units from Netgear, aimed at home and small business use. The R2 update for Windows Server 2003 was mostly about bug-fixes plus the odd feature tweak, but that's not the case with Windows Server 2008 R2. Expected around October, Windows Server 2008 R2 is a far more important release with a lot more in the way of new features and functionality than you might normally expect from this kind of mid-term update

The good Great touchscreen and keyboard Huge 32GB of internal storage Camera is a highlight Decent media playback The bad Inconsistent performance Symbian platform needs a UI overhaul Design When looking at the N97 front-on you could be mistaken into thinking this latest Nokia is nothing more than an iPhone clone, though this would be selling Nokia's excellent design well short. It might be a touch thicker and heavier than Apple's phone, but it also addresses a few of the physical elements of the iPhone that we wish had been changed in the iPhone 3GS update. Between the 4mm in extra depth and the matte plastic finish, the N97 is much easy to hold, and then there's the sliding screen and the superb keyboard below it.

The good Screen tilt and swivel Built in speakers Decent movie and game performance The bad Low brightness keeps colours in games and movies from standing out The ultra-glossy screen is ultra-reflective and sometimes prevents dark details from being seen Design and features The HP 2009f's black bezel and 20-inch screen are strikingly glossy and, not surprisingly, fingerprint magnets. The bezel measures less than 25mm on all sides while the uniquely designed panel that sits behind it protrudes 6.35mm from the right, left and top.

The good Slick NAS admin UI Highly featured SMS alert support High transfer speeds The bad Cheap display on the NAS "Stations" need to be overhauled Design QNAP's TS-509 Pro, like most NAS units, is a big box. In this case, it's a gun-metal grey chassis with a black plastic fascia. A silver power button, activity lights for hard drive, USB and network access are on the front, with a USB port and a programmable quick copy button situated at the bottom.

The good Great all-rounder that can be configured to your needs Excellent upgrade potential Dense storage capability Six PCI-E x8 slots offer good expandability The bad Quite noisy, even for a server Fans must be removed two at a time Sun Microsystem's Sun Fire X4275 is an excellent all-rounder, although we'd love it if the noise could be cut down a little more. External and internal design Sun's 2RU Xeon 5500 series server threatens to stand out in a datacentre filled with black machines, thanks to its powder-coated silver finish. Then again, it'll match in nicely if you have a few Apple Xserves already
