The good High-res display Cool colour combos Typical high-quality Sony construction and design The bad Poor battery life Smallish keyboard Higher resolution screen adds an AU$200 price premium Loud fan Sony's first foray in to the world of Atom-powered laptops was the Vaio P-series Lifestyle PC, which sported a unique miniaturised design (about the same footprint as a standard business envelope), but was hampered by input issues (no touch pad), and the use of Windows Vista as its OS. At the time of that product's release, Sony was adamant that despite the Atom processor and small size, it was most definitely not a netbook.

The good Surprisingly lightly CPU usage Bolsters last year's reputation-based detection engine with a new behavioural-detection system The bad Still a fairly hefty CPU footprint New efficacy results show that while it continues to be in the top five apps at detecting malicious software, it still doesn't have the highest rate of detection Dramatic improvements to its Norton suite during the past two years indicate that Symantec has been listening to the needs and complaints of its customers. The company's strong and surprising changes to Norton's impact on system performance that it introduced last year are maintained in this new version and a new behavioural detection engine called Quorum shows that Symantec can juggle performance and protection. Six months after showing off the demo , Seagate has announced that it is now shipping what it says is the world's first 3.5-inch 6Gbps 2TB hard drive. The drive is based on the third-generation of the Serial ATA (SATA) standard, roughly called SATA3. The majority of existing hard drives use the SATA2 standard that caps at 3Gbps.

The good Same basic chassis as Dell's more expensive netbooks Very low entry price The bad Limited configuration options Inset screen is not as nice as the Mini 10's edge-to-edge glass The "v" in the Dell Mini 10v's name is seemingly there to indicate value for thrifty netbook shoppers. The system is in many ways hard to distinguish from its more expensive cousin and is one of the better under-AU$600 netbook packages we've seen. It does, however, lack the high-end configuration options of the regular Mini 10, including a higher-resolution screen and webcam.

The first of the Core i7 laptops has crossed our path, and it bears the badge of Asus. Promising more performance, the mobile version of Intel's latest processor inherits the Turbo Boost feature from its desktop brethren, meaning that within a pre-defined thermal envelope individual cores will overclock automatically when more power is required

The good Sharp design Built-in HSDPA SIM card reader Good battery life The bad No 802.11n or gigabit Ethernet Trackpad is a bit on the small side Editor's note: the NC10 is exclusively sold by Optus in Australia and as such no outright RRP was available at the time this review was written. Contract pricing is listed in the review.

Google Wave arrived back in May with a blast of publicity — including a keynote of its own at Google's I/O conference . The initial story from the Google team was impressive, with Wave touted as a revolution in collaboration from star developers the Rasmussen brothers (the team behind the first iteration of Google Maps).

The good Print and BitTorrent servers built in Great throughput Inexpensive 802.11n The bad Have to pick between FTP/BitTorrent and Printer sharing Support documentation is poor Difficulty getting printers to work Design The RT-N13U's design most closely mirrors the design of many of Netgear's routers, albeit in a smaller form factor. It's a vertically mounted router with a moulded plastic base. The practical upshot of that is that it only visually works vertically.
