Intel has a message for investors and the rest of the tech industry: it's dead serious about smartphone chips now. Intel's first dual-core smartphone chip, the Atom Z2580, is due later this year, followed by "Merrifield" silicon due in 2013 - a redesigned Atom chip. These chips will also be offered with Intel-branded 3G/LTE silicon.

Ivy Bridge will highlight Intel's emphasis on power efficiency and graphics performance, but one key ingredient will be missing - Windows 8. Intel 22-nanometre "tri-gate" 3D transistors, compared to more conventional 32-nanometre transistors. Intel Australia gets new leadership

Long-serving Intel Australia and New Zealand general manager Philip Cronin is set to vacate the post after eight years in the role, moving on to a higher position in the company's Asia-Pacific business. Kate Burleigh (Credit: Intel) Cronin is set to ascend the role of director of Regional Sales and Business Development for Asia Pacific, with his position as general manager being handed over to Kate Burleigh. Burleigh joined Intel as a public relations manager in 1997, the same year as Cronin, and progressed into various other management positions, including her most recent position as marketing manager for Australia and New Zealand

Intel pays US$120m for video patents

Intel is buying video patents and software from RealNetworks for US$120 million, giving the chipmaker new muscle in a market that's increasingly important but filled with intellectual-property obstacles. RealNetworks is selling about 190 patents, 170 patent applications and its next-generation video-encoding technology in the deal, the companies have announced.
