Apple wins eleventh-hour bid to avoid ban

Apple has temporarily blocked Motorola Mobility's attempt to have it withdraw several iPhone and iPad models from its online store in Germany, the latest twist in an extended legal duel over patents between the companies. The sale of the devices was briefly halted after Motorola Mobility enforced a ruling that it won against Ireland-based Apple Sales International from a court in Mannheim, Germany. The court had earlier ruled that Apple should not be using Motorola's mobile technology in the devices without a licence.

EU launches probe into Samsung antitrust

The European Commission has announced that it has launched a formal investigation into whether Samsung has used wireless patents as an anti-competitive tool, in violation of its commitment to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Samsung's lawsuits against Apple over the last year - claiming that the iPhone maker violates wireless patents Samsung holds - could come back to haunt the company. In fact, the EC, which is the executive arm of the European Union, said in its investigation discussion that Samsung has "sought injunctive relief in various Member States' courts against competing mobile device makers based on alleged infringements of certain of its patent rights, which it has declared essential to implement European mobile telephony standards"

THQ trimming Aussie staff numbers

Motorola sues Apple over iPhone, iCloud

In the seemingly endless Apple-Motorola legal slugfest, Motorola has just taken a few new swings at its rival, possibly at the behest of its would-be acquirer, Google. (My trusty gavel image by Brian Turner , CC2.0 ) A new Motorola lawsuit, filed yesterday in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida and spotted by patent blogger Florian Mueller, claims Apple is infringing on six of the company's patents with two of its latest product offerings: the iPhone 4S and iCloud. In the suit - Motorola's second against Apple in this particular court - the company makes the case that Apple has infringed and continues to infringe on those patents

iPhone 4S wins Android, BlackBerry users

Apple 's iPhone 4S appears to be winning a healthy number of customers from rival mobile platforms. A hefty 36 per cent of iPhone 4S buyers said they jumped ship from an Android, BlackBerry or Palm device, according to a study released yesterday by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) .
