The latest analysis on online job ads from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations makes for depressing reading: online job ads in ICT fell again last month. In April, newly advertised jobs for ICT professionals were 2 per cent down from March, and 22 per cent down on a year ago.

Kaspersky’s antivirus denied on iOS

Kaspersky Lab is the latest company to be denied the chance to develop an official antivirus app for iOS. AVG and Trend Micro are others that have openly criticised Apple for making it difficult to develop antivirus apps, but they don't want to risk their developer status to make a jailbroken equivalent.

SuccessFactors launches Sydney datacentre

in brief SuccessFactors has announced that it will start hosting its cloud products out of a datacentre in Sydney, Australia, to service customers in the region. The SAP-owned company is targeting government and local businesses with the datacentre, which will host the SuccessFactors Business Execution suite BizX. The datacentre, obtained via the company's purchase of Australia-based analytics firm Infohrm in 2010, is a Federal Government panel-certified facility, and is also ISO 27001 certified.

Dell profits plunge in spending lull

Dell's results were weak across the board in the first quarter, as large enterprise, public sector and consumer sales fell. Dell's race to transform itself into a company with more software and services couldn't outrun weak hardware spending. The company reported first-quarter earnings of US$635 million, a drop of 33 per cent from a year ago, from revenues of US$14.42 billion, down 4 per cent from a year ago.

Google closes Motorola Mobility deal

Google has finally closed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, installed Dennis Woodside as CEO, thanked former CEO Sanjay Jha for his service and outlined a goal to create "the next generation of mobile devices that will improve lives". In other words, the fun is just beginning. Google CEO Larry Page outlined the closing of the deal, and how the search giant is aiming to reach people in emerging markets who view the phone as their desktop

Fed Govt steps up on shared cloud plan

The Federal Government has proposed advancing its shared cloud strategy for government agencies, unveiling a draft strategy for a "community cloud". The Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) described the community cloud as "cloud-computing services shared by several organisations that have shared requirements (eg, mission, security requirements, policy and compliance considerations)"
